On the side...

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 12966

"Actually," said Inquirer, "there was one more little side trip I wanted to make..."

Meanwhile, back at the place the Champions just left….

Bishop and Abbot, both having stormed after the departing odd people who’d turned everything upside down and backwards with that rather outrageous act are staring slack jawed at the spot where they saw the TARDIS just vanish right in front of their eyes.

The others also had been in a position to see the vanishing act, and also are more than a bit shocked.

”Did you?….” Bishop asks quietly, still staring at the spot of the now departed TARDIS.

”We….may have a deeper problem than we previously believed,” Abbot says, visibly gathering himself. “That….. shouldn’t have been possible. We’ve had this building under surveillance….and there wasn’t any way possible for that….that Police Box to have gotten in here. What did that one guy call it? A TARDIS?!”

”If….that is a TARDIS….it would explain why he looked like the Doctor,” Mary, the NSA agent that Carl had been trying to ask out on a date says abstractedly.

”The Doctor? Doctor who?” Abbot asks, unconsciously mimicking the oldest joke in Whoism. “Who exactly?”

”That explains why he looked familiar!” Carl suddenly says, feeling like slapping himself on the forehead for not having seen it earlier. “The only reason why I didn’t connect before was that I was more familiar with the Baker incarnation of the guy, and not the earlier one!”

”You watch Doctor Who also?” Mary asks, instantly warming to Carl.

”Wait! Hold up,” Liz says, trying to calm Abbot and Bishop, who look ready to explode in loud questions. “Let’s start from the beginning, slowly. Now, both of you young people….exactly what are you talking about?”

The young male NSA agent, at a gesture by Abbot, goes over and deactivates the bug that Inquirer and others had detected somehow. Abbot had a feeling that he didn’t want this to get out, because if it was found that he actually was even LOOKIN like he believed in little green men and UFOs (or grey haired older gentlemen travelling around in a blue Police Box)…..he’d have problems!

Liz, looking reasonable and regal at the same time despite still wearing the bathrobe she’d been wearing when the interlopers……somehow knocked her and the others out (she still refused to believe her last memories of elves suddenly popping out of thin air). So, with that as a calming effect, Mary and Carl tell about a British TV show that began in the sixties….and was still going to this day in 1992!

”….though, as an aside, I don’t know how much longer that’ll be” Carl sighs, “Colin Baker did quiet the number at losing a lot of fan support for continuing it.”

”But surely Sylvester McCoy will turn it around!” Mary protests, having dropped her professional demeanor awhile ago at this broaching of her favorite show.

”I hope you’re right, but there still is that damn rumor of cancellation from the BBC,” Carl says, and then coughs at getting sidetracked.

”Yeah, anyway that appears to be what……could be actually happening here,” Mary says, with a trace of growing excitement at the possibility of there actually being Time Lords and all that running around in real life. She then stops and the excitement is tempered by the possibility that Cybermen, Daleks, and the Master (wasn’t there that one strange man who’s name translated in Greek to Master out at the VLA during one of it’s upgrades….nahh!). But whatever the case, things looked a bit….more dangerous all of the sudden!

Abbot and the others look like they’d already come to that conclusion.

”But what can you tell us about your dealings with these people?” Abbot prodded, trying to get a feel of the situation.…a better picture to this bizarre situation!

He was desperate for a clearer view! Thankfully, the hostility between himself and Bishop seemed to have been subsumed by this crazy stuff, so the Sneakers comply.

The Sneaker tell their story, and then wince internally knowing how crazy it all sounds now! Abbot looks like he’d had trouble with a few parts in believing, but……

It’s no less insane than what they just witnessed. David Copperfield might have been able to do something like that trick…..given enough prep time and resources. Not possible here, though. The building had been too well covered for something like that!

”One of two possibilities could happening here,” Mother says quietly, “One is that those people were just here before that…..rather unusual exit intentionally made one of their own up to look like this Doctor….to perhaps throw off serious pursuit. That would explain the mode of dress….that at the time I just put down as a strange jab at the state of affairs by those Brits from MI6. They could have been twitting us by playing our….er…. unusual city and all. But in my humble opinion, that I've always said that the greys and such were real.....is that this Doctor is real enough....or at least has the capabilities of that Time Lord.”

Insane as this insane situation was, the others agreed with the second possibility.

”I’ve worked with MI6 in the past,” Abbot murmured, thinking to himself. “This just….isn’t their style at all. And frankly….we and they just don’t have the blasted capability of just popping out of thin air like that Ripley Eight character did with you. If we or they could……Lord help us all.”

Mother and look at Abbot, then decide to skip any questions about just what work Abbot did with British intelligence. They didn’t need the pain!

  1. Abbot then makes a snap decision….
