Since Astra and Anina's route lay through the Great Kingdom in any case,
[3443] the detour involved
in going via that country's capital would be comparatively small. They
assumed that
the Queen's Messenger had brought a message from the Queen to King Emry
and was on
her way back with the reply when she was killed. It appeared that someone
did not want
that reply to reach its destination. Why was that, and who was behind
this? Even if they
couldn't discover the answers to those questions, they could at least get
a copy of the
message from the King and ensure that this time it reached its intended
destination. It
obviously must be a message of great importance, if someone was prepared
to kill to
make sure that the Queen of Aquilaria should not receive it.
There was one puzzle, though. The spot where they had found Xanthe's body was hundreds of miles away from the direct route between King Emry's castle and the Aquilarian capital. Had she feared being intercepted and taken a very round-about route? If so, it had availed her nothing. Or maybe she had had another message to deliver before returning home.
