"I was sure they had seen us," said Alexis dejectedly. "Why have they
turned away?"
"They can't have seen us after all," said Fred. "Or perhaps they just
didn't
realise that we needed rescuing." "Set fire to the shirts. That will get
their
attention," Robert suggested. Again Fred suspected his motives. But they
had nothing with which to start a fire, and in any case it would have been
too
dangerous on a wooden boat.
As the ship vanished over the horizon, they reassembled their makeshift sail. There was more of a breeze now, and Fred guessed that they were making about eight knots. A few hours later night fell, and they made themselves as comfortable as possible, which wasn't very. They debated having someone stay on watch through the night, but in the middle of an empty ocean it seemed pointless. The day, though of tropical warmth, had been overcast. This was good since Astra and Alexis, being redheads, might have sunburnt easily. Now the clouds were breaking, though, and the stars were becoming visible.
