"What are you doing, Nat?" Stacy asked. "Making sure that they can't trace
you, Stacy,"
Natalia replied. "They?" Natalia hesitated for a moment before replying.
She's wondering how much
she should tell me, Stacy thought. Perhaps she'll say it was a slip
of the
tongue and that she meant 'he'.
What Natalia actually said, though, was: "Yes, they. Myer isn't working alone." She hesitated again, though not so noticeably this time, then said: "But I don't know who his allies are. However I can make sure that - regardless of who they are - they can't use magic to trace you. These symbols will see to that." Changing tack, Stacy asked: "Nat, what's going to happen to me tomorrow night when the full moon rises?" Stacy could see that Natalia was unprepared for the question. This surprised her. Surely the query should have been an expected one? Had Nat not seen Stacy's research material or read her journal? Stacy didn't know for sure, but she had been assuming that Nat must have done. Nat had said she had known about the journal - that they had had no secrets from each other - but maybe she had been lying? And since Stacy had moved in, Nat would not have had any chance to read either journal or research material without risking being detected, given that Stacy had never been out of the house. "Why do you ask?" Natalia said eventually.
