Much more worrying than the thought of danger ahead was that someone who
knew their
names had somehow known they would come this way. How was that possible?
There seemed to be
something magical or supernatural at work here, against which neither
Anina's sword nor
Astra's improvised staff was likely to be of much use. Whilst they didn't
exactly laugh
at danger, they decided that having made their plan they might as well
stick to it. Not
only would to turn back as a result of such a vague warning be the act of
a coward, but
if magic was involved then it wouldn't make them any safer.
Having stopped for lunch (the washerwoman had provided them with supplies), they resumed walking. After an hour or two, they were obliged to come down from the hills to cross a deep valley. At the bottom of the valley they found:
