Fred's satisfaction over the return of the boy to his natural form lasted for only a few fleeting seconds. As he surveyed the room, the great mound of treasure had undergone a change. A creature twice as tall as Fred and Velus lay on the ground. His long hair was the colour of gold. His powerful arms and face had a silvery hue. His eyes were the clear blue of the most precious sapphire. He was clothed like a spendid beggar, in a patchwork of the finest cloth on the continent, with a magnificent bronze breastplate, studded with gems. In one hand, he held a large, round shield of bronze, engraved with historical scenes of forgotten days from the caves. In the other, he held a heavy wooden mace of a hard mahogony wood, studded with sharply pointed diamonds. The giant arose from the spot where the treasure used to be, and stared at Fred and Velus. Fred looked into the giant's face and suffered an involuntary and uncontrollable spasm, similar to an epileptic seizure. Velus cowered. The giant appeared to breathe and move with the motion of a human, but there was something about him that was cold and inhuman. The giant's voice filled the cavern. The voice was loud, but flat with a slight overtone, as that of a bell. "My power has not been lost. Where my treasures are, so was my heart. I still prosper. Despair, you craven mortals. Behold the power of Gratia Pecunia." With that, the giant's powerful arm swung the precious but deadly mace toward Sir Fred.
