Toby followed along with the witches, his lifeless eyes staring blankly
ahead. The embankment wound
along the path of the flowing lava until it came to a sharp turn. The lava
kept flowing straight on, but its
path now followed a narrow tunnel that disappeared into the wall that rose
before it. The embankment
though turned left and opened up into a wide corridor. The corridor was
rough hewn, formed out of the
rock of the mountain around them, just like the lava passage had been. Few
places in the Catacombs
were fashioned by the skill or hand of Mankind.
Toby walked along the corridor ignoring the few side tunnels that appeared now and then. He, as well as the other zombie that walked beside him, had been commanded to protect the group from whatever might lie ahead of them. The two remaining zombies were given the task of inspecting the unevenly spaced side tunnels. Toby obeyed his orders without question, there was no room in his mind for a sense of either curiosity or of dread. The witches did not follow the corridor all the way to its end though. When they came to the seventh passage on their right they turned into it. This in turn led them to a huge chamber. The corridor became a wide expanse whose furthest ends terminated in a sheer drop. Above them the ceiling disappeared into shadow, and below them the foot of the cliffs was hidden from their sight. They had finally reached Gundra's Cliffs. A pit yawned open in the middle of the stony ground. Stairs were carved out of the rock inside of it and the witches followed them down. There were caverns inside of this great rocky outcropping, caverns filled with mushrooms and other night growing things. Now although mushrooms sprouted throughout the Dragon's Caves, within this particular place could be found the ergot mushroom, a rare and peculiar fungi. It was used in the making of unguents and poultices designed to cure lycanthropy. Desdemona needed to harvest a rather large crop of the ergot; Mother Abigail had a simply delicious plan for their use. The Wolf clans had been quite troublesome of late and she intended to put them out of their misery. Lycanthropy was such an odious curse that Abigail felt it was high time that the werewolves were cured. Their curse would be lifted and they would become fully human again. And then the Coven of Sekete would slaughter them all. But first Desdemona needed to gather the moon-white mushrooms and unfortunately the witches were not the only ones who had come to this place looking for something. The flicker of torchlight warned the witches that others occupied the cavern. They crept slowly down the last steps of the stone stairs and peered into the cavernous hall.
