Fred thought over the strange words. He knew that he might not be
translating them correctly, after all, his specialty was dragon-slaying
and not linguistics. He did remember what the Teachers of Magic had
taught him back home, however: Words are a powerful tool, they are the key
of diplomacy, of war, and of death. Fred knew that even ordinary words
could be used to weave the fibers of the magic-realm, could be used to
bring forth that power from there to te 'here' of his own world. Though
it frightened Fred, he decided to attempt to use what little he knew of
the magician's language and read the runes in a new light.
He began slowly and in a low voice...he could barely hear himself. He intoned each rune and runic partnership as he had seen the mages do in his own land. Many hated the wizards, more feared them, but they obeyed the will of the King, and that was enough for Fred to accept them. After Fred read the passage, though, he was no closer to anything... his reading did not arouse any magical spell. hmmmmmm. If I am to follow this direction then I must exit these caves. But how? I have no boat and this underground river seems to fill the whole cavern. Fred looked at the message again... memerizing the runes as best he could. Then he commenced to find a way up and out of the cavern and out of the caves. He realized as he searched that slaying the dragon was more than one knight could handle. He realized that he would have to return to his King and tell him of his failure. He also realized that he would have to petition his King into gathering together not one slayer, but a cadre of dragon-slayers, so that Fred coud return to this evil place. But to do all this, Fred first had to find a way out. And if I can find the ancient Flamebane mail or whatever else these runes may point to, the better for me!
