The landscape didn't look very inviting. But to the left, just behind the
beach, was
a stand of trees that might enable them to hide from the things
that were pursuing them. The creatures were vaguely reminiscent of giant
slugs in the
way they moved, though they traveled far faster and their shape was wrong
for slugs.
Astra and Ally reached the trees, which seemed to be dead and were mostly covered in a gray slimy coating of moss or lichen. The body of Pat slung over Astra's shoulder was slowing her down, and the creatures were gaining on them. It had started to rain heavily, and the bald head of the unconscious man began to shine as it got wet. Astra was beginning to wonder if they could be in Hell. The place certainly seemed unpleasant enough. She had to give Ally credit, though. Although obviously afraid, the girl ran beside Astra with a look of grim determination on her face.
