The Never Ending Quest - Episode 12078

Fred was surprised that it was some gawdawful necromancer from the lands of the amazons who had cultivated the Dragon of the Southern Caves. For one, his people had never known that the Dragon was a Wizard, they thought of it more as a monster than a mage, more a beast than a creature of thought and purpose. Secondly they believed the beasts indigenous to that mountain range.

Astra was shocked to learn that the Voice was none other than the most dreadful and dreaded magic-user in all of Aqualaria. No one of her people knew how long this man-beast had walked the earth; no one knew how many women and men it had killed, mutilated, eaten; no one knew its purpose above and beyond mayhem and destruction; but all knew that it was keen, watchful, intelligent and resourceful. But again, no one in their wildest dreams had thought that it was moving north, moving beyond the jungles and into the northlands.

"Cat got your tongue, princess of Aqualaria?" mocked Zerm. "I suppose I should jus--" within the minds of Astra and Fred they felt a silence, and then gurgles and gasps, they knew that the Voice, that Zerm was under attack, they felt within their minds that he was being strangled. And then they felt... nothing.

"What the hell just happened?" whispered Fred.

"I... I'm not sure," answered Astra.

Before they could form any more thoughts they heard a large explosion and felt the ground shudder. They looked up at the ominous tower and saw an upper section burst out followed by great smoke. Brick and stone and mortar began to rain down upon the ground, little hitting Fred and Astra for they were a hundred meters away, but their bewilderment caused great confusion and anxiety. What was happening? Had Zerm really been attacked? By whom?

They could hear screams coming from the tower, and noticed that on the ground level a gate had opened and men and women and other things were streaming out, running, running as if for dear life!

Then they heard a new scream, a cry as if from a great bird. Looking up they saw a black beast escape the heights of the tower, more smoke billowed out now, surely a terrible fire burned within. More stone rained down, and the heroes believed the whole tower would soon fall to the earth.

They heard the black beast again, they saw now that there was a rider upon its back, a cloaked figure. It was riding the beast but only with great difficulty. The figure forced the flying animal down onto the ground, not far from Fred and Astra. The stranger lept off and the beast immediately took flight, flying high and to the east. The stranger approached the two trapped heroes.

Fred and Astra, not knowing whether this was friend or foe struggled to free themselves, but they could not. As before all it achieved was to entangle them even more.

The stranger approached, stood next to them, next to Astra. Then the stranger spoke: "Zerm is dead." A female voice. "I want you to know that that bastard will hurt no one ever again. Fred, if you ever are able, send messengers to Aqualaria, tell them that the Unspeakable died this day at the hands of..."

The stranger stopped speaking.

"At the hands of whom?" asked Astra. "And why order this Allarian? Do you not know that I am here who's home is Aqualaria?"

"I do," answered the figure. Then she took out a shortspike from the folds of her cloak...and she pierced Astra's chest with all her force.

"DAMN you!!!" cried out Fred, unable to do anything else.

The stranger then pulled out a longknife and cut the ropes of the net nearest Astra's dead body. "You should be able to free yourself in a few moments."

Fred heaved and shoved and saw that this was true. "Why?" he asked wiping the blood and tears from his eyes. "WHY?!?"

But the stranger did not answer. She walked away a few meters and then a strange glow enveloped her.

  1. Follow Astra's killer...
  2. Follow Fred...
