Avoiding a Paradox

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 120144

"But you have trusted the Mater before, Doctor," the brown-haired Betty said, evidently not having heard the red-haired Betty's muttered aside. [8559] "But maybe it hasn't happened yet in your timeline. Anyway it's when..."

"Stop!" the Doctor said loudly. "You mustn't forewarn me of something that's in my future. Even if I try not to let it affect the way I react when it happens, I still may do something different. And that would create a temporal paradox that could have very serious consequences."

"Sorry, Doctor."

"If you two have quite finished," the Master said a little irritably, "what I was going to suggest, Doctor, is that if your TARDIS can't travel back to the VLA then you should fire a missile from here to take out the control room."

"A missile! The TARDIS isn't armed with missiles!" The Doctor sounded horrified at the very idea. "In fact there are no weapons on board at all."

"Really? My own TARDIS is fully armed. It's a dangerous universe out there, Doctor."

"And all the more dangerous for you being in it...

  1. "So do you have any other ideas?"
  2. "But I might be able to jury-rig things so I could fire an EMP pulse at the control room. That would fry the electronics and therefore disable the VLA, without its operators coming to any harm. That should avert the imminent catastrophe."
