The Never Ending Quest - Episode 119703

Given that Melissa was wearing a short skirt and a t-shirt [1320] it seemed unlikely that she could be hiding anything substantial on her person, but just in case Fred patted her down as chastely and non-invasively as he could. The only thing of interest that he found was a label at the top of her t-shirt on the inside which bore strange symbols and the cryptic words "Any cycle is OK". Could the garment be imbued with some sort of protective enchantment, they wondered.

Meanwhile the King had untied and removed her trainers, as that seemed the most likely spot for her to be hiding something, but found nothing. "Perhaps we should try to open one of her cuffs," he suggested. "We need not fully release her, if you feel that could be too dangerous."

"All right. You had better be the one to try, Sire, since - judging by your success with my cuffs - you have the gift but I do not."

"It may be that the magic does not allow one to release one's own cuffs. That would make sense. So you may be able to release the girl's. I suggest that you should try first, so we can learn whether that is the case."

So Fred tried to release the cuff on Melissa's left wrist, as he thought that might be less risky than freeing her right - and likely to be her dominant - hand.

  1. He succeeded.
  2. He failed, but the King succeeded. Perhaps a freeing touch was part of the divine right of kings?
  3. But neither of them could release Melissa's cuffs. Why should the King have been able to free Fred but not Melissa? Was she more important to the Dragon for some reason?
  4. But just as Fred touched the cuff, Melissa groaned. She was coming round.
