The voice is a lie

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 119427

She was at first relieved to hear the voice speak, but this immediately gave way to bewilderment and concern over what it had said. "But... but that doesn't answer... Look, I just want to know if what you said was true. If we can win! I..." Tears trembled in her large eyes. "I can't lose Vodirk."

"Then I'd recommend you fight very hard. I'm no god, and I don't serve one - no prophet, no seer, no, none of that. And if I were, why should I tell you anything? I told Vodirk what he needed to hear so he would accept you. So I could slot you into this life. Oh, Fred." The voice was extremely mocking, or maybe it had been from the beginning, and she'd only just now noticed. "Look at you! How was he, by the way?"

The idea of asking why the voice had wanted this outcome didn't even occur to her - it really wasn't her concern. "You lied to him," she said, her voice wobbling. "Manipulated him!"

There was a thunderous laugh. "And to you?"

Her head hurt. She didn't want to think about that - it would ruin everything. "I'll tell him. I'll tell him you can't be trusted."

"I hardly think that will advance your cause. He trusts you to win. But go on, tell him it's hopeless and uncertain and he can't trust you because he can't trust the god that gave you to him. I'm sure, if he even believes you, that'll go over greeeat."

Folcrada clutched the pelt to her chest as she sank to the hard ground, weeping piteously. At last the voice sighed and said, "Come on, girlie. That's no fun for anyone. Go get some sleep, and we'll see what tomorrow brings, shall we?"

At length she stumbled back to bed and pressed herself against Vodirk, but sleep was slow to come.

In the morning, she donned her armor, and so did everyone else. They were all full of exuberant joy, but she was petrified with fear. It had sounded like the Longrunners were formidable foes... and she wasn't even familiar with this body. She couldn't possibly fight as effectively as usual, but even that might not have been enough.

They met their foe on the battlefield, the Mountain Clan streaked with red blood and the Longrunners with blue. Folcrada gleamed silver, and was a very noticeable sight. "I beg you," she prayed to the Great Voice, "protect us, but most especially protect Vodirk. Lead us to victory."

And so the battle began. It was chaotic, and loud, and bloody. Her foremost concern was keeping Vodirk in her sights and destroying everything that came near him.

  1. But she was forcibly separated from him, and captured by the enemy, borne away from the battle as it still raged.
  2. The fight ended in a Mountain Clan victory, with heavy losses. But as they searched the bodies, they could not find Vodirk anywhere.
  3. But she couldn't stop the spear that caught him in the gut.
  4. She did stop the spear that would have caught him in the gut, with her own gut.
  5. After less than an hour of combat, the battle was won, and she kissed Vodirk in crushing relief. It tasted like blood.
