An impossible choice

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 119097

These words immediately chilled Fred to the bone, and she forced herself to calm down, and try the only card she saw to play: "Please, you don't have to do this. Return me to my true form and I shall be a mighty warrior once again, surely a valuable asset capable of assisting you."

"You're a mighty enough warrior currently," said the voice, amused. "That's rather the point. Haven't you been paying attention?"

"I - I can't do what you have described. I have a holy quest to fulfill. The dragon threatens everyone and everything in the realm. Its fiery breath will incinerate the world if it isn't stopped."

"Smart, my lady, but the beast is no concern of mine, nor is your quest. You have chosen your destiny already." As the voice spoke, Fred's surroundings began to melt, to be replaced by a vast village of tents at the foot of a mountain overlooking a wasteland, packed with people clad in animal pelts, who began to shout in excitement at her apperance. The man who stood beside her immediately reached for her, pulling her to him by her waist, and, though she had only lost a few inches in height, he towered over her by at least a foot. His startlingly blue eyes stood out against his dusty hair and darkly suntanned skin, and there was no denying he was very handsome, and very stout, his chin strong and shoulders broad. A few leather scraps of armor were strapped to him, but they were quite crude indeed.

"Now," said the voice, and now, instead of booming in Fred's mind, it seemed to echo across the barren landscape, and a hushed reverence immediately fell over the crowd. "Vodirk Strongarm, Warrior-king of the Mountain, I present to you Folcrada the Far, the Silver-clad, vision of beauty and strength: your new queen. I have hand-selected her for you as the blessing for which you have prayed. Do you take her as your queen?"

Vodirk nodded vigorously, staring down at Fred. "Yes, Great Voice. Thank you."

"And Folcrada," the voice went on, "do you take Vodirk as your king?"

Fred was struck with fear. If the voice was to be believed, she had to choose between willing marriage to this barbarous monster, as a woman, or her mind being, apparently, blunted like a sword. But what, exactly, did that imply? Even if she was "primitive," she should still be able to say no, shouldn't she? But just what level of primitive were we talking? What if she became so slow she forgot her quest entirely, and still married this wildman?

After a long, tense pause, she said,

  1. "Never!"
  2. "Yes."
