The boy was aged eleven or so. He was dressed in long flowing robes, and
had a swarthy complexion and black hair.
No doubt he had never seen fair-skinned people like Fred and Astra before
(though at
the moment they were more red-skinned). From the way he looked at them as
they
emerged from the pond, Astra surmised
that he might be thinking: Who are these strange people who have been
wandering
in the desert with most of their skin exposed to the burning sun? She
decided to
speak to him, though she had little hope that he would understand the
Common Tongue spoken
in Allaria and Aqualaria. "I am Astra and my friend is called Fred. What
is this place?" she asked.
