"That's a bit insane," said Ernendaff in almost-blank shock. "Who knows how the rest of them would react! It would take time, and a lot of energy." "They're ogres," said Rullmend, practically but somewhat callously. "They could all tear each other to shreds; as long as Gerkka is unharmed, it really doesn't matter if we incite chaos in their ranks. Ogres are dangerous brutes and the world is better off with fewer of them. Based on what we know of To'og's age and size, and gender of course, there are only about six ogres who could possibly be him. It won't take us too long to transform them, and once we do know who he is, he'll be much less dangerous and much easier to transport. Which is good, because Gerkka's already going to give us enough trouble. She is heavily pregnant, and can't be very fast at all." Gentle Torin didn't love the plan, but Ernendaff admitted it had its merits, and they lay in wait. In the middle of the night, they began their work. The transformations were gentle, and they slept right through them, and the outward-facing guards didn't notice them. The morning was liable to be quite chaotic indeed... When Gerkka awoke to a cacophony of shouting, it took her dulled mind a long moment to make the obvious connection with the mage who had approached her the previous night, but at last, it did. She looked around frantically, seeing several humans running around, looking angry and somewhat frightened, shouting with the cadence of an ogre. But the ogres were simply screaming about how they'd stolen into their camp in the night, and taken their clothes, and where were their missing members?! Gerkka realized she saw To'og nowhere, and in this same moment, one of her kin grabbed one of the men by the feet and smacked him into the hard ground. "Stop!" she cried, but no one seemed to be listening to her. And she cried, frantically: "To'og?" "Me To'og!" she heard, in a puny human voice, and it took her several long seconds to find its source, but at length she did: a tall man with dusty brown hair and a huge belly, but a man indeed, much, much smaller than her. She didn't think; she only grabbed him up in her hands, pressing him against her chest and carrying him like a baby as she lumbered away from camp. He squirmed and protested, but she had no thoughts in her mind except to keep him safe. The mages watching were thrilled that their idea had worked even more smoothly than expected! They made to follow the retreating ogress...
