Fred - or Petunia - was much smaller than she had been, but Belboz was an old man, and she had a big advantage when it came to speed and agility. Before he had time to react, she delivered a swift kick to his kneecap and, as he buckled and howled in pain, she sprinted to the exit. She was gone long before he had recovered enough to think about casting a spell after her.
After five minutes or so, she decided that she was safe from pursuit, and anyway she was too out of breath to run any further. She no longer had her map or supplies, and was lost somewhere in the maze of tunnels that was the dragon's domain, her only assets the pink silk dress that she wore, the flimsy underwear that she could feel beneath the dress, and the slippers on her feet. She was definitely not attired for spelunking. If she ever managed to escape from the caves, where should she go? Her first instinct was to return to her rightful homeland of Allaria. But if she couldn't be restored to her rightful form, then she feared that she would be an object of pity there, and her pride rebelled against that. Maybe she should try to reach Nova, a land that she had never visited, but where she apparently was now a princess and so should be able to lead a comfortable life. What had happened to the original Princess Petunia, she wondered. Had she fared even worse at the hands of Belboz than she had and was now dead? Or maybe the dragon had got her?
