Embron's question presented Annabella with a dilemma. On the one hand she did not want to lie to her king, whom she greatly respected and to whom she had sworn a solemn oath to serve faithfully, back when she was made a knight. But to tell him the whole truth would, she knew, land her beloved in enormous trouble.

"Yes Sire, our marriage was about six months ago," she said.

  1. "But I'm afraid that I can tell you nothing about the missing knight." (Arguably that was even true, depending on just how you interpreted "can".)
  2. "But I'm afraid that I can tell you nothing about Lord Fred." "How did you know his name?" Oops!
  3. "Prepare yourself for a shock." And she told him the truth, her sense of duty outweighing even her deep love for Belboz.
