One of the more unusual ingredients in the potion had been parrot feathers, and it seemed that Phelyp had botched the amounts, to disastrous results! It was auspicious for him that his subject had no voice, for her screaming would have had him found out and arrested in a jiff. Alas, there was no way for poor Bella to articulate her pain as her body reshaped itself. It began to shrink at once, her arms sinking into her sides and widening in comparison to her progressively smaller body. Her perfect face was distorted, her eyes moving to the sides of her head, and her mouth and nose fusing and growing to a sharp, curved point of a deep black color. Her toenails grew into talons and her legs into ugly grey spindles. A short tail formed at the base of her spine. Her beautiful golden hair fell out in clumps, and all over her body sprouted feathers in vivid hues of red and blue! But many of these later changes went unseen by Nate or Phelyp, as by now Bella had grown so small that she had vanished into her simple dress. Phelyp reached forward and nervously pulled the dress off the small lump on the floor. Standing where Bella had been, appearing completely dazed, was a gorgeous eclectus parrot approximately the age of nine! "Bella?" Phelyp asked quietly, and at once Nate had grabbed a fistful of the front of his shirt, and demanded, "What have you done, you old hack?" As Phelyp babbled nervously trying to explain himself, the poor creature didn't move, except to blink. After several minutes, Nate calmed down, realizing that Phelyp may be the only hope of reversing this, and allowed the old man to approach the parrot. The creature's eyes focused at last on him, and it squawked--a happy sound?--and flapped clumsily in his direction. Phelyp was somewhat glad to see evidence that the love potion was still in effect, but this... oh, this just wouldn't do at all! "Bella," he said in a low voice, "please. Do you know me? Give me some sign that you understand what I'm saying." The parrot...
