The Never Ending Quest - Episode 118159

In something of a daze—though knowing this, and not caring—she walked. Dust coated her feet and calves, and her pace was unbearably slow, not even taking into account her frequent need to stop for a breather. But she went on down that road until the pale light of morning at last began to dry her hair.

Finally, she found another plot of land: a nice cottage sitting by a different branch of the same lake. Her eyesight wasn't the best, but even if it had been, she doubted she'd be able to tell with certainty whether she truly recognized it. She approached slowly, the boardwalk creaking slightly beneath her feet. It must be fragile indeed if a creature as slight as her caused any kind of strain in the planks.

She stopped near the door, and turned to look out over the water once again. All was quiet, except a distant chorus of toads. She knew exactly what the sounds meant. She knew all too well.

Tandrus would be waking, and worrying.

She came forward and sat at the edge of the dock, her small feet, now dirty and sore, trailing the surface of the water. She considered her life, and the last few days. She felt human. Properly so. She was not quite sure yet what that meant, but it meant something. She hadn't felt truly human for something like fifteen years.

Was it all the cruelty of fate? Was she, for no reason in particular, meant to be here, a half-toad, half-woman, serving a witch, and not a noble Allarian knight on a quest to slay a dragon terrorizing the realm? Had someone else slain the dragon in Fred's absence? Had he been unneeded, and so the universe had delivered her unto Ginnie, so at least she could be useful to someone? True, she felt gratitude towards the witch she served. There was no denying that her life had improved when she'd taken her away from Rhys's cottage and given her a job to do.

Except... that job was hurting people. Surely it was.

Her poor, muddled head was beginning to hurt. She wasn't used to thinking this hard. What could she do, anyway? Her inability to communicate... well, anything to anyone made the notion of planning, of wanting change, useless. She couldn't do anything. Except what she was told.

It seemed obvious that nothing would change.

  1. The door to the lakehouse behind her opened.
  2. A toad hopped up to her, seeming to very much want her attention.
  3. She eventually got up and started on her way back to Tandrus.
