Maggie had been waiting patiently for Fred to return for her, but as time passed and he did not reappear she became increasingly anxious. Hsd he been discovered, and either killed or imprisoned? Eventually she decided that she had to do something rather than wait any longer, but what? Should she brave the icy water and go after Fred, at the risk of hypothermia? Or should she use the passage that she had used last time, even though that would carry a greater risk of discovery? What could she do to help Fred anyway? She was not a warrior like he was. Perhaps it would be best to try to escape from the caves as quickly as possible, even though that would feel disloyal to the one who had freed her.
