Rick came limping in later that day, wearing an unconvincing smile. Freda was just glad to see him in one piece. After he embraced her and eased himself onto a stool to rest, he said wryly, "Considering what happened to you, I guess I can't complain too much, eh?" Freda, chewing her cud lazily, said, "I don't know, I'm all right. Quite happy, really." Rick nodded, though there was a sadness behind his eyes Freda didn't understand, being a cow and all. "Well, I'm glad to hear it. I heard you... gave birth after I left. I hadn't realized you were pregnant." This topic was rather unavoidable, as the young bull was standing quite near Freda, and his coat was very similar to hers. "Yes," she confirmed. "They've named him Angus." Rick looked at the bull, appearing quite unsure what to do. "I guess he doesn't speak." "No," said Freda. "I suppose that's good. It would just make this whole thing even weirder," said Rick, chuckling somewhat awkwardly. Freda wasn't sure how to weigh in on that. The situation was no longer "weird" to her, and hadn't been for so long she couldn't remember what it was like to think that way--it was just her life. She said nothing, continuing to chew. Rick eyed her. He had been adventuring for many months since he'd last seen her, and had to become reaccustomed to all this. In fact he had never quite become accustomed to it in the first place. He asked at length, "You really are happy?" "Yes," said Freda. "I have everything I need. Why wouldn't I be?" "Everything you need," Rick echoed. Freda, not knowing if it was a question, answered anyway. "Food. Water. A comfortable place to sleep. My calf." "I suppose there's not much else a cow could ask for," Rick murmured sadly. Freda continued to chew her cud. Rick attempted small talk, asking about the weather, the farmhands, anything he could think of. At some point Freda ceased to answer, having fallen asleep while he was speaking. She hadn't talked so much... well, perhaps since she had become a cow, and it was quite tiresome. Rick left her alone. Upon returning to his father's manor, Rick found himself exhausted as well, and slept through the night, though his dreams were uneasy. He woke up early the following grey morning, and made a resolution as he lay in bed.
