Orphan Hannah

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 117436

It happened so suddenly. Though perhaps, considering their poor living conditions and chronic malnutrition, it should not have been such a surprise. Still, given that both mother and daughter had survived many an illness up till now, it just seemed that their luck - if one could call it that - had run out. Muriel fell gravely ill and died a few days later.

Grief-stricken and without a guardian, Hannah wandered the streets on her own for the next few weeks, stealing scraps and begging in order to survive. At night, she often found shelter in unused stables and doorways. Her life had been hard before. Now, it was unbearable, and she knew all too well she was on borrowed time.

One day, a member of the city guard found her stumbling along a back alley, too weak to try escaping. The guard took charge of Hannah and led her off to the orphanage. Or so one might assume.

Instead, Hannah found herself being smuggled through the back door of a large nondescript building near the edge of town. It was the headquarters of the local Thieves Guild.

It seemed the guards had an agreement with the guild allowing them first pickings of any strays being brought to the orphanage. If they thought the child had potential as an apprentice, the guard would receive a good price, easily twice what the orphanage paid. Overall, it kept both parties happy. The guild would have all the apprentices it could need, and the guards could make some extra money.

Quickly, Hannah was assessed, and though she was thin and small for her age (starvation tends to stunt a child's growth), the heads of the guild noted the sharp look in her eyes honed by a hard life on the streets. They took her in and paid the guard.

  1. When she is once more able to, Hannah sneaks out of the guild, unwilling to become a thief.
  2. Hannah refuses to become a thief, but the guild in turn refuses to let their investment go to waste. She is given a different job at the guild.
  3. Hannah eventually integrates and starts learning the craft.
