Hannah quieted suddenly, struck by the words. Her past life glimmered faintly in the darkest recesses of her mind. With a single word, Belboz could have smote her where she'd stood, all that time ago. But instead, she was here... All of it was only by his mercy, or at least judgment. Perhaps... perhaps it was true. She really was nothing. Not without Belboz. It was a strange thing to accept. On the surface, it didn't sound comforting, but for perhaps the first time she came to consider that it was better than the alternative she should rightly have expected. Everything she had now had come from him. Even everything her mummy had—the house, and Hannah herself—had come from him. It was a neutral truth that she could not deny, and she felt sudden clarity on pondering it, or at least the closest thing to clarity she had experienced this past year. She threw herself into Belboz's arms, clutching him tight, and he held her back. The children went on bullying her, and she accepted it silently. She could no longer blame them, and saw truth in their every word. As she grew, she understood unfailingly that she did not exist apart from Belboz. He was practically holding her together, and her mummy, too. They both needed him. She became antsy, even anxious, when a few weeks passed by with no sight of him. But most of the time, his visits were frequent. Also as she grew, it came to be, gradually, that she no longer believed in the truth of her past life. She barely even remembered Fred as something she had imagined. And yet her conviction regarding Belboz held fast, never to be shaken. She never left the village. There she remained as the largest cities in the kingdom were besieged by the dragon's forces. There she remained as Allaria was subjugated. There she remained as the world burned, crying out for a hero who would not appear. She was not quite six years old, and never made a single move unless it was Belboz's desire—who could expect that that hero could possibly be her? Naturally, she only ever left because Belboz wished it so.
