"Oh," said Gabby. "This is... well, it's quite odd, isn't it?" "Sure," said Maggie, a shrug in her voice, "but not altogether unpleasant." Ruthie was still struggling a bit. She didn't feel any particular panic, but intellectually she still knew this would be quite a hindrance to her quest. "Yes..." she was forced to concede. "Yes, it's quite nice, actually... but..." "But what?" asked Freda, head tilted. "Now you're like me! We can have such fun together. Being a cow is - well, it's a really nice life. Relaxing. Easy." Ruthie strained, and shook her head. "I know, but -" "But nothing," agreed Belboz, holding up a sliced potato to her snout, which she immediately and contentedly began to chow down on as he petted her head with his other hand. "Freda is right, I've just released you all from a life filled with pressure and danger. You can stay with me, and I'll take care of everything you need. All you need to do in return is let me milk you. I'll bring in a male to get the ball rolling, sooner or later. You get to help me with my important work, and all you have to do is get a daily massage!" "Wow," sighed Maggie, "that sounds like a perfect life." Belboz smiled, and none of the four cows noticed the wicked curve to it. "Do I hear a thank you?" At once they all began a chorus of gratitude, which even Ruthie joined after a moment's hesitation. Freda listened, beaming, and turned to him as they finished to say, "I owe you my thanks too, Belboz. I won't feel so alone now." "You're welcome, Freda my dear," said the necromancer. "Now, let me show you all to your enclosure..." He brought them inside, and showed them to a nice little barn-like cavern in his tunnel system. They quickly forgot the path they had taken to get in, so there was little chance of them escaping even if they ever tried, which, with their new dispositions, they were unlikely ever to do. They settled down very quickly, and chatted amongst themselves endlessly about the benefits of this change over their previous lives. The depth of Belboz's powers even left Ruthie and Gabby excited about being cows rather than bulls. They all spent hours discussing the virtues of having hair all over one's body, how fun it was to chew their cuds and swish their tails, and how hooves were ever so much easier to keep track of than all those pesky fingers. Naturally, in the midst of these discussions they came by the information that Freda had once been a human as well, to which they reacted with shock but quickly that shifted into contentment - Freda had similarly escaped a complex human life to a lovely bovine one. They didn't even pry enough for Ruthie to realize who she had once been. As he had promised, Belboz quickly produced a bull for them to mate with, and soon they were all expecting.
