The type of fish Fred had become had an average lifespan of a little less than half of that of a man, so, being a six-year-old girl, she had become a three-year-old fish. Now, as she was spilled onto the stony pathway, out of the magic water for the first time in years, her body changed rapidly. Her skin prickled all over as her scales receded, and hair grew quickly from her scalp. Her bones reshaped themselves and her gills smoothed over, and she gasped, her lungs filling with air. She registered the presence of actual limbs, but they only flailed, useless and weak, as she flopped limply on the stone, looking rather like a fish out of water as she struggled to recall how to move. She dimly realized that she was much larger than before, but right now it was impossible to tell exactly how old she was, or how long it had been.
