There was a moment of resistance as Fred struck. But only a moment.
The woman reared back, and then Fred realised. It had been no lady at all, for all of her child-motivating abilities. This had been a trick, a cruel trick. It had been the bear all along, hunting him with its bearly wiles. But he had seen through its ploy, and struck true.
There was a gush of blood, as the bear slumped forwards, its teeth descending towards him. This was a serious situation, Fred thought.
