They seemed so friendly, Fred could see no reason not to be honest with them that she was alone. Upon hearing this, one of the young women asked, "How came you to be traveling alone, child?" This, on the other hand, was probably not something to be so open about. How strange the truth would sound! "My parents passed away several months ago. I have been on my own since then, and have recently run very low on money." "Oh, but that's terrible!" said the woman. "We are also travelers, and have for some time now been living more or less as vagrants--" "Wanderers," corrected the second man, who looked very much like her. "Traveling performers really. What is your name, lass?" "Hannah," replied Fred instinctively. "A pleasure. I am Jacob, and this is my twin sister, Jacklyn, her beloved, Thomas, and our childhood friend, Catrain. We earn our way doing performances from town to town. You are welcome to join us." "What direction are you heading?" asked Fred. "Southward, at the moment. Why, do you have a particular destination in mind?" "No, just wondering," Fred lied. "I would love to join you, thank you ever so much!" And so the unlikely group set off. Fred surmised that the twins were around 22, Thomas a few years older, and Catrain a few years younger. Jacob was very clearly the leader, everybody else normally deferring to his judgment. In fact Catrain hardly spoke at all. Fred found that, accidentally, she became one of the louder members of the group, as it was so easy to make her laugh. They traveled for a couple of weeks without incident. They stopped for several days in each town to perform each day on the streets, which significantly slowed their progress, but Fred didn't mind so much, deciding the company was worth the slow pace.
