When the sisters woke up after just a few minutes, Jane immediately said, "Isabella, you will willingly and happily marry Prince Wyndam. The rest of you will remain here in Gully with me and our parents. All of you will act as loyal sisters and princesses of Gully are expected to." They all felt a shift inside them, though they didn't understand it. In the following few days, Jane issued many more commands to them that they found themselves unable to ignore. She couldn't manipulate their emotions in this way, but they felt almost irresistibly compelled to do and say and act in any way she told them to. Isabella's wedding to Wyndam was in three months. Fred had been existing as five different women for about a week when they, for the first time, found that they all had a free afternoon, and spent it walking together in the gardens. Talk naturally threaded towards their future. "Once I'm married, what will that mean for us?" Isabella asked fearfully. "I've wondered the same," said Katrina. "When we're apart, even within this castle, I feel sort of hollow inside, like I'm not a full person. Which I'm not, but you know. I really feel it. What will it be like when one of us is worlds away?" "There must be a way out," murmured Ermentrude, but nobody responded for a long moment. Because Jane had already done away with so many possibilities. They were not allowed to mention their predicament or their shared origin to anyone who did not already know, nor were they allowed to leave the kingdom until after Isabella's wedding, at which point she could, of course.
