The battle is hard fought but one of the pirates manages to catch Katrina by surprise and shove her hard enough to severely disorient her, and another one whom she had disarmed lifts her up by the waist and tosses her overboard. The other three sisters are screaming bloody murder by this time, and so the pirates promptly knock them all over the head, and they succumb to darkness. Upon reawakening, they find themselves dressed in rags with their wrists and ankles bound tightly, and confined to a dark room. Presently the captain appears, saying, "Evening, ladies. I am Captain Jon Laney. What might your names be?" They introduced themselves after a moment of hesitation, started off by Marigold of course. The captain said with a wide grin, "Pleasure to meet you. Where do you hail from?" Marigold hesitated, feeling compelled by social conventions to answer, but recognizing that it would be unwise to tell the truth, or even that they were supposedly princesses--a pirate would surely make an attempt to cash in on that. Isabella, thinking quickly, cut in, "We are but peasant women from Allaria, of the family of Kroger. We find ourselves far from home but recently were fortunate enough to receive the help of Lord Caldwell of Macedonia." Isabella was stealing all these names from old stories she recalled from her time as a young boy on his father's knee. She only hoped Captain Laney had never heard any of these tales. "Lord Caldwell, hm?" asked the captain. "And he dressed you in those ballgowns, knowing you would be traveling on foot?" "All right," amended Isabella hastily, "he didn't really give us the clothes. But he did give us rooms, and well, we stole away in the night and took the clothes, hoping to sell them for a fortune a few towns over." Laney said to this,
