"All right," Gemma had to say immediately, and again she winced, heart thudding. Lovely, she was engaged now. At least she could still hope that the man wouldn't even remember this conversation in the morning... Before he could say anything else, she asked, "Is there anything else I can get you?" "Yeah," he said, "kiss me." He leaned forward, puckering up, and she did the same, unable to stop herself. Fortunately she managed to make it a light peck on the cheek, and immediately stepped away to fill somebody else's drink. But there were only a handful of people there at the bar, and that blasted "attentive" command forced her shortly back to the old drunk, who exclaimed, "Playing hard to get, I see! Try again, but on the lips and nice and long!" Gemma shuddered in revulsion but she had to. He smelled absolutely terrible and his beard tickled her face something awful, but she couldn't pull away. She couldn't end it unless he did, she eventually realized. But then Garrod's voice was sounding behind her, shocked: "Gemma! Stop that now!" With immense gratitude she pulled away, wiping her mouth. The old drunk seemed to be on cloud nine, but Garrod cried, "Gemma, that is most untoward behavior for an employee!" "Not to worry," slurred the drunk, "we're engaged." Garrod gave her a sidelong glance and asked, "Really?" She looked at the floor and nodded, and Garrod said, "Well... still! Keep it to your private time, you hear?" "Yes, sir," said Gemma, while the drunk slurred, "Can't wait for that time," and promptly passed out. Gemma felt like crying. All she could do was desperately hope that he had no memory of this later, and that she could play it off to Garrod as a joke. "Rocky start, Gemma." He shook his head. "Listen to me. You will act appropriately. Friendly, but not too friendly. I have a reputation to uphold. You hear?" "Yes, sir," she said again. She worked the rest of the night. Nothing nearly as dramatic happened for the rest of her shift, and the drunk was still snoring on the floor when Garrod led her to her room. It was a nice enough place.
