Caught in Air

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 116092

Fred gasped, collapsing to his hands and knees, his lungs drinking in as much oxygen as they could. Eventually he managed to sit back on his heels, still breathing both heavily and raggedly as he surveyed his situation. He was naked except for the shackles which still adorned his wrists and neck, and he now sat in a spherical container of air, maybe four feet in diameter, resting upon a base of coral beneath him. He very much suspected it was enchanted to be fed a steady supply of fresh air. The container itself was made of something similar to glass in appearance, though bearing a milky swirling pattern that slightly obscured what was on the other side.

But he could see Narissa regarding him, eyes wide with anger. "How did you manage this?" she cried. "You said you wanted to be a human male, but I had no idea you wanted it this much..."

Fred didn't know what else to try but the truth. "Please," he said, and even as he pleaded he relished the feel of his true voice in his throat, "this is my true form. A mermaid manipulated me into the one you met me in, but this is the way I was born, and have lived most of my life. I was a knight on a very important quest, for the good of the realm. I beg of you, release me."

He wasn't sure whether Narissa looked any less angry. At length she said,

  1. "No, you will continue to serve me as my apprentice. It makes no difference to me if you are a man, but you will be a Cecaelia."
  2. "No, you will continue to serve me as my apprentice. It makes no difference to me what form you take while doing it."
  3. "No, you must be punished for attempting to escape."
  4. "Which mermaid? Was she called Melody, by chance?"
  5. "Tell me more about this quest."
