Roland, Shaun and Ed trusted Sarah in this bizarre, zombie-choked environment. Sarah, not Josh. Josh was a known, chaotic quantity. Even in Roland's world.
Sarah and Josh are informed that Josh can come with, only if he agrees to obey the orders of the others. Any order, without question. Sarah does not like this at all but this is the zombie apocalypse.
To the surprise of Roland, Josh actually obeys orders for the next hour, even some nonsense ones Ed came up with.
Maybe this will work out.
Josh gains credibility five minutes later when he...

  1. saves Shaun from zombies hiding in the support pillars of an interstate bridge.
  2. finds drugs hidden in a compartment of the vehicle and instantly tells Shaun.
  3. reminds the group that food can be found in unexpected places, like the snacks near the register of a hardware store.
  4. spots dozens of female monthly supplies in the back of an overturned car. Not only Sarah will need them eventually, they make great wound protectors.
