It was a nightmare. It came in the dead of night--suddenly the house was ablaze, and Fred and Henry were just doing their best to get as many children out of the house as they could. Some, however, perished. In the end, Fred and Henry had saved only five of their twelve children. Their ages were 20, 15, 14, 13, and 10. Fred had been seven months pregnant with twins for almost six years. It was absolute agony. But it didn't compare to losing the children. They weren't exactly hers, but in a way they were, and she had failed them. Fred's body was wracked with sobs, as Henry just did his best to control his own pain and escort what remained of his family to safety. They ran out of the blaze until Fred couldn't move anymore, and rested for a bit before continuing to run. Finally they reached a village. Henry explained what had happened, and a kind innkeeper gave them a few nights in his best room free of charge. Fred sobbed until she fell asleep that night. She awoke the following morning to a bitter determination to return to her quest, now that she was free. The dragon must be slain, no matter the cost to her. But she couldn't put herself in physical harm. She couldn't risk losing her babies too. She'd have to figure out some other way to help. As a 35-year-old pregnant woman of very short stature with no muscle to speak of, physical work wasn't really in the cards anyway. But what could she do? After bouncing around for a bit, the family settled down in a large city, where Fred signed on as assistant to a wizard who was trying to develop an enchantment that could kill the dragon.
