Fred wondered what her kidnapper could possibly want from her, but her gag, as well as the threatening tone of the man's voice when he told her to keep quiet, discouraged her from trying to ask him. Her capture seemed to make no sense. Their family was poor, and Henry certainly couldn't afford a worthwhile ransom.
It was several hours later and night had fallen when the carriage eventually came to a halt. They had presumably arrived at their destination. There was the sound of the carriage door being opened. Then one man took her shoulders and another her feet, and they lifted her and carried her out of the carriage and into a building. From the limited glimpse she had of it in the moonlight, it appeared to be:
