Fred drank deeply, her head almost entirely submerged, and still she felt the man's hand around her own. She realized that he must have skill in magic of suggestion, but that was not the most pressing matter at hand. For his hand and the water sliding down her throat was not all she could feel. Something was deeply wrong. Her hand slid out of the man's as her arms began to recede into her torso. Her head began to shrink, her body to reshape itself. All over her skin she felt horrible prickles as scales emerged. Her legs were disappearing too, but she was not falling—was that man pushing her forward? Her skull flattened from the sides, most of her bones becoming thin and delicate and very, very small. Her limbs were mere memory at this point, and in fact none of her body felt familiar in the slightest. Water was swirling around her, everything in a flurry of motion, and she tried to gasp, but it was not the same process to breathe, something tingling at her neck. Slowly everything began to settle down, but she was still panicking. Fred had become one of the silver fish swimming about in the basin—smaller than the rest, but in every other way just the same. The wizard reached into the water to pull out the frilly pink check dress that the girl no longer had any use for. Fred the fish could not hear him through the water, and indeed could not perceive much visually at this point except some sunlight framing a dark shape above her, but he said, "There now. I suspect Belboz won't miss you. He'll be having his own special punishment for masterminding this attempted robbery. At least you won't suffer, eh?" And with this, he departed from the fountain. For a time, Fred swam around in a frenzy, trying to process what had happened to her.
