Stacy ran after the kid but she soon realised that, though she seemed to
be pretty fit and was wearing
flat-heeled shoes, she had no chance of catching the street-wise boy. This
being
New York, nobody seeing a boy being chased by a woman made any attempt to
intervene.
The boy disappeared amongst the crowds, and Stacy gave up the chase.
Damn, she
thought, as she stood panting whilst she got her breath back. First
amnesia,
and then I get my month's pay stolen.
She contemplated going to the police, but realised that almost the first thing they would do would be to ask her for her address. She could guess what their reaction was likely to be when she said that she didn't know. Fortunately she had hung on tight to her shoulder bag [5489], so she still had it, together with her wallet with the ATM card and almost sixty dollars left from her last use of the card. [5820] If only she had been more careful with her pay check and put that in the bag too, she thought, instead of putting it in the pocket of her dress. [5474] The punk had probably seen the end of the check poking out of the pocket.
