Fred was shocked, and opened her mouth, but nothing came out that could address the ludicrousness of what Belboz had just said. The necromancer snapped his fingers, and Fred blinked, bewildered. Had that been magic? But she didn't feel any different... "Girl," said Belboz then, producing a vial of sickly green sludge from his generous sleeve, "this is a simple potion I've recently developed. It's supposed to cause hair to grow very rapidly. Would you mind trying it out?" Fred became intent on the vial, finding herself fascinated by the proposition. She could test it? Really? Newly developed magic? She was honored by the offer, and reached for it eagerly. Belboz handed it to her with a smile, and she uncorked and downed it at once. She shivered - it tasted foul - but she was beside herself with excitement as she pulled her hair over her shoulder to look at it. "I'll observe you for a few hours to see if the enhanced growth rate is immdiately noticeable," said Belboz. "I'm not sure how fast it will be - or if it will even work at all." Fred nodded. "Well, do you have anything else I can try in the meantime?" "Oh, don't get ahead of yourself," said Belboz with laughing eyes, "it's best not to mix potions. But don't worry, if you stay here I'll have plenty more for you to try." Fred hesitated. Staying here would mean delaying her noble quest... but this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! Surely King Embron would understand. And thus it began. By the end of that day, Fred's hair was long enough for her to trip on, and Belboz gained valuable information as he continued to take notes for the following days, by the second of which the growth had practically stopped altogether. Once the potion was out of her system, Belboz had a new one for her to try. Fred became fascinated by the scientific process, and even when the potions' effects were unpleasant, she pushed her discomfort aside for the good of the cause. She did really dislike being a little girl, and after a few days said to Belboz, "Why can't I do these tests in my true form? You know I'd be perfectly happy to." The real answers, of course, were 1) if anything should go wrong with her enchantment and she should become discontent, a little girl would be much easier to contain than a knight, and 2) Belboz was infinitely amused by the transformation. But he simply and breezily lied, "Oh, that's a test too. A new type of transmutation spell. I want to observe how you grow." And, per the enchantment, upon hearing this Fred accepted it immediately and easily. A few months passed. Fred was treated relatively well, if a bit too much like a real little girl. She was perfectly happy to be shut away as much as the tests required. Belboz never shared news of the outside world, saying he didn't keep up with it, which was also a lie. They settled into a routine, and the seasons began to change. Then...
