Sleepy Charlie

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 115187

Charlie stays abed for several hours, hoping to fall asleep, as he is now very tired, but he does not. Around noontime he gets up, and dejectedly goes to the kitchen to make himself some lunch. But he is so sleepy that he stumbles a few times on the way there, and he finds himself nodding off standing up. Eventually it is clear that he lacks the dexterity to produce anything even slightly complex, and just has some fruit and bread. He is beginning to fear that a terrible mistake has been made.

He spends the rest of the day in his potions room, trying to figure out what went wrong the the original, but he keeps losing focus and slipping into microsleep. Eventually, night falls, and he retires to his own bed. This time, thankfully, he is able to sleep.

He wakes up around 7 the next morning as usual, and drags himself out of bed to check on Susan. She is still sound asleep and unresponsive. And Charlie? He is still sleepier than he's ever been, even half an hour after he got up.

Charlie is slowly realizing that eating that single bite of the pastry was possibly the worst thing he could have done. His best guess is that while he did not ingest enough potion to put him to sleep forever, as Susan had, it was still enough to get him part of the way there. Which means... he will never be in top form again, and he needs to be in top form to save Susan.

Days pass, and his hypothesis gains more and more support with every hour that goes by. Charlie is constantly tired, never able to focus for too long, and yet his sleep cycle remains the same.

Eventually, Charlie

  1. runs out of food, and must go to market stumbling every few steps and unable to pay proper attention to the world around him.
  2. decides to use the rest of his money to purchase as many sleeping potions as he can, so he can at least spend a few weeks getting the rest his body feels like it needs.
  3. is fed up with not being able to focus on anything, and just goes to his potions room and starts drinking bottle after bottle, hoping for either a solution or death.
  4. decides to visit a sorcerer a two days' journey away to plead for help.
