The day had begun with a beautiful dawn and soon thereafter Jed, Rafael and
Valen had commenced their
journey to the Southern Caves. Rafael, Sir Jed's squire, was as excited as
a Tetrilonian badger. The
fifteen year old boy had never been on an adventure before. He couldn't
wait to get to the Dragon's lair
and explore its mysterious caves. Of course, if the mission had been to
actually find and kill the Dragon,
Rafael would be feeling very differently about it all. But, although King
Emry had indeed sent them off
on the Dragon Quest, he had also charged them with the mission of exploring
the Dragon's dark demesne
and their primary responsibility was to return with a map of its passages
and caverns.
And so Rafael told himself that he need not worry about facing the Dragon. The fact that the last man to have mapped out the Dragon's caves had returned home half-dead and crippled seemed to have slipped his mind. Rafael was fully aware of course that Sir Jed had every intention of finding and slaying the vile Dragon, but since the success of their mapping mission was of paramount importance to the King, the squire felt fairly confident that if events turned badly they could all safely retreat to more wholesome surroundings. And under the King's mandate such an act would in no way besmirch Jed's honor or threaten him with the black ribbon. And so it was that as he traveled along the King's Way, getting ever closer and closer to the dark peaks of the Shreken Mountains, Rafael the squire felt no fear or dread but rather was filled with an ever greater degree of anticipation and excitement. Who knew what he would find there? And when he returned he would be the envy of every other squire in the kingdom. He would have fame and honor, and they might even make him a knight.
