Perhaps the woman had seen Fred enter the room right behind the other man,
and had jumped
to the conclusion that they were accomplices. The woman was facing the
door, in order
to cover the two men who had entered after her. Earlier, without a weapon,
she might
have seemed defenceless against a man armed with a knife, but now that she
had retrieved her
crossbow she looked confident that she could handle the situation. This
was presumably
her home, since she had found a weapon so quickly. When she saw Astra come
in behind
the two men, she looked startled for a moment, but she added Astra to the
group whom she was
covering. Then she gestured to indicate that the first man should drop his
knife, and he did so.
The woman, like the man, had the black hair and dark complexion typical of the people of this region. Fred spoke to her, though with little hope that she would understand his language: "I saw this man draw his knife and chase you, and I came to your aid. I am not your enemy." "And I'm his friend. I saw him chase after someone, and followed to find out what was going on," Astra added.
