The boy refilled her glass.

"Friend, Carl," said Astra, "What do you need liberating from?"

"From our enemies who come from above. From the beasts that come in the night. From the demons that lurk under the water. The Great Liberator who once set us free from slavery will return and set us free from this world and lead us into the promised land. So it is written."

Astra and Stacy exchanged glances and Astra took a swig of rum.

"I must confess," said Astra, "that I do not know this prophecy."

Stacy winced but decided it was best not to intervene. This was just going to have to go the way it was going to have to go.

Carl smiled. "And it is written that the Great Liberator will not know of her purpose and yet her followers will know her by her godly stature and her hair like fire. And her likeness shall be worshiped in the Great Temple."

"The Great Temple," said Astra. "I'd like to see that."
