Blood and Mayhem

Stacy turned her attention back to Julie and Zimmermann. Zimmermann had apparently had a gun in a concealed shoulder-holster. He must have had the safety catch off, and when Julie had ploughed into him the trigger had been depressed. He was sprawled across a seat. Blood was flowing copiously from a wound in the side of his chest, and his eyes were closed. Julie was bending over him, her face pale. "My God!" she said, in a voice that shook. "I think he's dead."

As Stacy tried to think of something to say to comfort Julie, she saw the pilot peering back from the cockpit, trying to see what was going on in the cabin.

1. Then he jumped down from the plane, and sprinted across the airfield. He was hired to fly the plane, not to get mixed up in a shooting match.
2. Then he came through into the cabin.
3. Stacy saw he was speaking on the radio, though she couldn't hear through the closed connecting door.
