Three Men Is Too Many

As luck would have it, Jacob's gun skeetered across the floor, to finish up at the feet of one of the other two bodyguards, who had been motionless with surprise for the last couple of seconds. The man bent down, picked it up and aimed it at Stacy. She was still flat on the floor, and knew it would take her too long to retrieve the knife from Jacob's chest.

"Stand up slowly and keep well away from the body," the man told her. "Then put your hands up."

At least he hadn't killed her out of hand, she thought. She did as he had ordered, her robe still hanging wide open. How many shots had Jacob had time to fire, she wondered. There was one to kill the mugger, and she thought he had fired another two or three at her. Unfortunately that still left at least two bullets in the gun.

1. "I don't intend to kill you," the man with the gun said. "I figure you're worth more to us alive than dead."
2. "Don't worry," he said. "I'm only pointing this at you in case you were thinking of attacking us. But I haven't forgotten that we're supposed to be working for you."
3. "Do you have your phone, Bill?" he said to the other man. "Some photos of her like that would be nice."
