Oops!

For a moment Fred was too shocked to say anything. Then he stammered out an apology, but it went unheard, as by this time Melissa was screaming as she looked down at her bloody ear, which was lying on the cave floor close to her foot. Blood was streaming down the side of her head and dripping onto her shoulder. She moved her now free right arm, and put her hand to her head in an attempt to staunch the flow. This was not very effective, and Fred realised that she might lose a dangerous amount of blood. Rummaging in his pack, he found a piece of material that he could use as an improvised bandage. He had nothing with which to hold it in place so, after gently pushing Melissa's bloody hand away, he held it in place until, after five minutes or so, the flow had slowed to a trickle.

1. Melissa seemed to have gone into shock, and after she stopped screaming hadn't said anything.
2. Recovering, Melissa directed a stream of invective against Fred, including some words that he wouldn't have expected a lady to know. Still, he supposed he could hardly blame her.
