The man's scream had been loud enough that, unless the room's soundproofing was exceptionally good, Stacy was sure that both Jacob next door and her bodyguards outside must have heard it. In fact she just had time to adjust her robe so that it covered her chest and its tell-tale tattoo, before she heard a loud knocking at her door. Then there was a thud, as one of the men presumably threw his weight against it in an attempt to break it down. "It's all right!" she called. "I'm opening the door."
She did so and Jacob burst in, his gun in his hand. His two underlings were right behind him. His worried frown turned to a look of relief, as he saw that she seemed to be OK and that her attacker was out for the count. "Are you all right?" he asked. "Yes, I'm fine. It's another guy from the Dark Blade. They have it in for me for some reason." She wasn't going to tell Jacob why, of course. "Your right cheek is very red. I think you're going to have a nasty bruise there. But what were you thinking of, opening the door to him?" "I was hungry and ordered dinner from room service. Since your two men evidently thought that he was legit, I didn't think that I was at risk." Jacob turned round to face the other two, his face livid. "What were you two thinking of? You should never have let him pass. One of you should have taken the trolley and wheeled it in, while the other kept an eye on him out in the corridor. I ought to sack you, but I need you to stay on duty here overnight."
