Embron and Jastina's son, Theocharistus (Theo), had taken a wife, Emmelina, over twenty years before, and their twin children had been born shortly afterward and were of marrying age themselves now. As such, there had not been any children in the royal family for some time, but any time now one of the twins would get married and that would change. Jastina was more than ready for this and in fact getting rather impatient, so when one of her ladies-in-waiting, the mother of the ageless little girl, passed away, she was more than ready to take the child under her wing, and Embron needed little convincing. The dragon had been strangely quiet in the last fifteen years or so, and the kingdom had known an era of peace. Many theorized that it was in a deep sleep and may stay silent for hundreds more years. Or it could wake up tomorrow. Nobody could say for sure, but Allaria was tentatively hopeful that this peace could continue, and Embron and Jastina, who were by now in their seventies, were just about ready to abdicate. And Fred? Well, Fred had stopped fighting her magically imposed identity long ago. She had no choice; after a while, it was accept it, or lose her mind in the face of it. Just a few years after she'd stopped aging, her tutors had realized she was also to remain a young child mentally when they found she could not advance any further in her studies. It was difficult for her to learn, to memorize, and over time she simply forgot things as she ran out of space in her underdeveloped brain. And as such, she had all but forgotten that she'd once been a knight. Sometimes she remembered she was not who she used to be, but she rarely dwelt on it, because most details had been lost to her. So each year, Hannah learned more or less the same things. She remained inside the castle at all times, usually sticking close by her mother. But now, her mother was gone, and Hannah cried for many days, as any young child would after losing a parent. And when she was beginning to accept what had happened, Embron and Jastina had a private talk with her, and made her an Allarian princess. She was not a princess who would ever rule anything. She was only a cursed little girl who had no family left. Immediately after the adoption, Embron and Jastina stepped down from the throne, and Theo became king, leaving the elderly ex-royals with the full-time job of raising Hannah - a singular task, as child rearing usually involves a fundamental element of growth and the expectation that the child will learn and mature. Embron and Jastina knew they would need to be patient, and they thought they were up for the challenge. The first day after Hannah became princess of Allaria, she was playing in the otherwise empty throne room with her dolls when in walked...
