Unfortunately for Fred, the tunnel was a very big one. It was not only large enough for a dragon, but large enough for a dragon to fly along it. Fred heard the beating of dragon wings getting closer and closer behind him. Eventually he turned to face Astra. He would sooner die like a man than be struck down from behind as he fled.

If his situation had been less desperate, Fred might have been able to appreciate the magnificence of a dragon in flight. Astra's scales were a brilliant red, and her wingspan was about fifteen feet. When she saw Fred standing facing her, she glided to the ground some ten feet away from him, and approached him on foot.

Then she seemed to hesitate.

  1. A sibilant rasping parody of her human voice said: "I've gained control of my draconic side for the moment, but I doubt I can hold it for long."
  2. The hesitation lasted only a moment. Then she pounced.
