Instantaneously, Astra found herself in what she assumed must be a back street in Walants. It was night, or at least late evening, but a full moon meant that she could see reasonably well except where the buildings cast shadows. Billingsley slumped to the ground beside her, as she let go of his hand. Remarkably, judging by his snoring he was still fast asleep. After the tropical heat that she had become used to on the island, it felt quite chilly, and she shivered.
"Looks like your boyfriend has had one too many," a man passing by said, jumping to the wrong conclusion. Luckily, he must not have seen Astra and Billingsley materialise from thin air. "He's not my boyfriend," Astra protested. "Husband then." "No." "So he's your 'client'? Looks like he's too drunk to have any hope of getting his money's worth." "Certainly not!" "Sorry, but that's what it looks like." Astra calmed herself. "Apology accepted." The line the conversation had taken gave her an idea. "I'm trying to trace a woman who lives here. All I know about her is that she runs a brothel. I don't suppose you could tell me where I might find her?"
