Jeppeline Turns the Tables

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 111244

“But you can’t stop me.”

“We’ll see about that.” Jeppeline extended her right arm quickly as she focused her magic. Glowing lines of white light lanced forward from her open palm and began to trace lines on the floor below the necromancer’s feet, quickly taking shape as a hexagram within a circle, about 4 feet across. The outer border shaped itself into strange arcane symbols. The pattern flashed brightly for a moment, and then seemed to burn itself into the floorboards.

Belboz chuckled. “A sealing circle? That’s the best you can do, sorceress? I’m so…disappointed. Insulted, even. Do you think such a childish cantrip can contain me? Really, I expected so much more from you.”

Jeppeline said nothing, keeping her expression impassive as she stared Belboz down. His face twisted into a sneer, and he raised his arms to brush away the sealing spell. What happened next came as quite a shock to everyone (save Jeppeline herself) as Belboz’s spell caused the circular pattern on the ground to flare up brightly in an angry red color, while the necromancer himself reacted with a pained groan as his own energies were seemingly turned back against him.

Belboz was incredulous. “H-How? You inverted my spell?! That’s not….”

“You didn’t look at the runes closely enough, did you? Just arrogantly assumed it was a standard sealing spell that you could easily brush aside?”

Belboz crossed his arms, and mumbled something under his breath, loathe to admit his mistake.

”That ought to last quite a while, especially now that you’ve put some of your own energy into it.”

”You don’t really think you can hold me in this little cage of yours for long, do you?” Belboz asked.

”Long enough.” Jeppeline retorted.

”I was going to let you off easy, you know. Not any more.”

Ignoring his threat, Jeppeline walked purposefully around Belboz towards the door, and waved for Fred and Henry to follow her. Once they were outside and down the path, out of the trapped Belboz’s earshot, she turned to them.

”That should hold him for a little while - at least a few days, perhaps as long as week. It’ll give me some time to figure out how to deal with him once he’s free of it. In the meantime though, you’ll be wanting to leave as soon as possible, get far away from here as you can. Out of this region, perhaps even out of the country. You’ll also need a spell to obscure Fred's magical aura, so Belboz won’t be able to find you with scrying or other locating spells. He probably won’t be able to track Henry or the rest of your family, since he doesn’t have any spells at work on them, as far as I can tell…”

”Wait! You mean we’ll have to leave behind our village, our home, and all our friends?” Henry asked.

”I’m afraid so. If I’m not able to stop Belboz, he will surely seek you out, starting at your homestead. Even if Fred were to run by herself, he might take action against you or your children in reprisal if she’s not there. I wouldn’t put anything past that monster at this point.”

”Why are you doing this?” Fred asked. “I mean, I’m grateful, of course, but you’ve taken on such a burden for us, who you’ve only just met.”

”I…don’t know, exactly. But for better or worse, I’m a part of this now, and will do my best to help you through it.”

The trio started off back towards the village. It was slow going due to the dark, though Jeppeline managed to generate a ball of light to illuminate their way. Fred found herself struggling, as she was still exhausted from the journey during the day, and had only a brief respite at the sorceress’ cottage. So within an hour they needed to stop for rest.

  1. Conversation turns back to what to do about Fred’s condition.
  2. Fred and Henry object to Jeppeline’s plan to have them flee. The logistics and expense of uprooting their huge family are just too daunting. Also, neither of them is comfortable letting Jeppeline face Belboz alone while they run.
  3. There is a huge flash of light off in the distance, in the direction they’d come from. Jeppeline looked grim. “Something’s gone wrong. He’s broken the seal already. Belboz is free…”
